Drugs ?
Does the Bible have anything to say about alcohol and drug addiction? Is it a sin or a disease in God's eyes? If I do have a problem can I get help from God and others?
To begin with, let's make one point very clear ALCOHOL is a drug! Whether it is a sin or a disease in your mind doesn't change the consequences of it. If you take the time to search in your Bible about drinking there is a lot of material. Passages like the following have been used to justify drinking.
1 Tim 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
John 4:46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
When I use to drink I even used this argument myself, Jesus drank wine, the first miracle he performed was to make wine at the wedding feast, so what's wrong with me having a glass or two. Well for starters a glass of wine for me would be at least a quart and who could have just one glass? And of course I'd have to have a half a dozen joints or more to go along with the wine. That's the way I use to think before I came to the end of my rope and asked God for help, that was over 10 years ago and by the Grace of God I've been sober since.
I use to think that the Bible had no prohibitions against drinking except that you shouldn't get drunk, but I was wrong.
STRONG DRINK is any type of hard liqueur, whiskey, vodka, brandy, etc:
Lev 10:9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:
Prov 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Isa 28:7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
Isa 28:8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness,
so that there is no place clean.
(Note sounds like a salute to the porcelain god, the toilet.)
Luke 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
1 Cor 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate (homosexuals), nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1 Cor 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
The verses above says it all, if your a drunk you shall not go Heaven!
Now lets talk about drugs, drugs are talked about in the Bible but you have to look a little deeper.
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
The word witchcraft in the original Greek is
pharmakeia, far-mak-i'-ah; from medication, drugs, ("pharmacy"), i.e. (by extens.) magic (lit. or fig.):--sorcery, witchcraft.Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
The word sorcerers in the original Greek which the New Testament was written in, is pharmakeus, far-mak-yoos'; from pharmakon (a drug, i.e. spell-giving potion); a druggist ("pharmacist") or poisoner, i.e. (by extens.) a magician:--sorcerer.
If you like to get drunk or get high its your business, I won't tell you not to, its between you and God, at least now you know the penalty for your actions. If you want to get straight there is help. There are many Christian bikers who have gotten sober with God's help and they would be happy to help you or you could write to us. The Bellbird of Death, The Arch Deceiver, Satan From Bible Illustrator
Lost in the jungle, a man sought desperately to find his way to safety. His strength was ebbing fast as the insects and stifling heat did their deadly work. Suddenly he heard what he thought to be a bell tolling in the distance. Believing he was nearing civilization, he struggled bravely onward; but he never seemed to draw closer to the sound. Finally he fell to the ground exhausted, never to rise again. The mysterious bellbird had claimed another victim! This story is related in detail by G.B. Robeson. He says that many a traveler in the heart of the rain forest of Central and South America has been led to his death by the uncanny call of this seldom-seen bird. Its enticing, reverberating "toll" produces an almost overpowering temptation to seek its source.
Similarly, Satan employs subtle devices to ensare the human race. As lost souls seek to disengage themselves from the vines of sin, they are allured by the tempter's "bell" ringing in the distance. "At last," they think, "I've found a way of escape," and so, following the call of the evil one deeper and deeper into the jungle of despair, they are eventually lost for eternity.
Many are following the deceptive call of the devil's "bell-bird" because it "seems right" to them. O that they might realize the truth of these words before it is too late: "The end thereof are the ways of death." Christ, who declared that "no man cometh unto the Father but by me" (John 14:6), is the only One who can lead poor wanderers to the promised land of salvation and safety!
