Testimony of

Rev. Mike Staggs

I was brought up in a military type home.  My dad served in the Marine Corps and thought of us as junior Marines in his boot camp. I hade 5 sisters and 1 older brother. So as the Marines teach you in boot camp, if one of you mess up you all get punished, and punishment was called a quart or a 6 foot whip.  Needless to say this only made us harder and more hateful to the rest of the world. To make a long story shorter, I took up fighting and it didn't matter with who. After following in my brothers foot steps and several problems with the law, my brother was given the option to go to jail or the U.S.M.C. Thinking all this was funny and still having my own problems with the law, a few of my friends and I were approached by the F.B.I. while in our senior year of high school and given an option to face 15 years in the federal prison or 3 years in the, yep you got it, the good old U.S.M.C. Seems they were still needing some bullet stoppers in the jungles of Viet Nam. So only being 17 I forged my dads signature and had a friend sign my moms and on my way to follow in my brothers foot steps. After training and a long time getting use to following my D.I's instructions & hand and foot signals, I found out that boot camp was easier than my childhood days.

When I reached Nam I thought it was a dream come true, where in the world could you send someone with so much hate in them and then give them a automatic weapon and all the explosives ??? There wasn't an ambush or a possible no return mission I didn't volunteer for and have a great time doing so. After Nam my Marine Corps duty wasn't nothing but trouble, trouble, trouble, so they asked me to take an early out and I did. Going home wasn't much better. My brother was in prison and needless to say I was just a step or two behind. The drinking, drugs and fighting took it's toll on my marriage and it was leading my son down the same road that I had just traveled. My first wife left me for someone who she thought was better and I just had more time to fight and to get drunk. Then I met a lady who was my complete opposite and we ended up making a half hearted commitment to one another and through the years of drinking and getting fired from work, my wife went to church and gave her life to the Lord. Watching this change in her made me want what she had, so I started looking for this man named Jesus and needless to say He wasn't lost He was with me all along and all I had to do was except Him and I did. From that time on I have looked to the cross and followed in Jesus Christ's foot steps as well as I could  and when I get out of step He helps me . My brother was stabbed to death in prison but several of my sisters have given their lives to Christ and two of our girls are following in His foot steps also. So if you want to take a walk on the wonderful side of life, follow in Jesus Christ's foot steps.
