JOHN (PART 1)

ISA 40:3 A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the
LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.
MAL 4:5 "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and
dreadful day of the LORD comes.
6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts
of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land
with a curse."
MAT 3:1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of
Judea
2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one
calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths
for him.'"
5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region
of the Jordan.
6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one
who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing
floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with
unquenchable fire."
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and
do you come to me?"
15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to
fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that
moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a
dove and lighting on him.
4:12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to
Galilee.
11:2 When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his
disciples
3 to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect
someone else?"
4 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are
cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to
the poor.
6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."
7 As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd
about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by
the wind?
8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No,
those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.
9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more
than a prophet.
10 This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger
ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
11 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen
anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of
heaven is greater than he.
12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has
been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.
13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.
15 He who has ears, let him hear.
16 "To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting
in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 "'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.'
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a
demon.'
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a
glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." 'But
wisdom is proved right by her actions."
14:1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
2 and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen
from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because
of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
4 for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her."
5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they
considered him a prophet.
6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased
Herod so much
7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of
John the Baptist."
9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests,
he ordered that her request be granted
10 and had John beheaded in the prison.
11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried
it to her mother.
12 John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went
and told Jesus.
16:14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and
still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
17:11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all
things.
12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize
him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son
of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John
the Baptist.
21:32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you
did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And
even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.
MAR 1:2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger
ahead of you, who will prepare your way"--
3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.'"
4 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism
of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to
him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his
waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I,
the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by
John in the Jordan.
10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open
and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I
am well pleased."
12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert,
13 and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was
with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the
good news of God.
6:14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known.
Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that
is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
16 But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, the man I beheaded, has been
raised from the dead!"
17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had
him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother
Philip's wife, whom he had married.
18 For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have
your brother's wife."
19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But
she was not able to,
20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a
righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet
he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet
for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of
Galilee.
22 When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and
his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you
want, and I'll give it to you."
23 And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up
to half my kingdom."
24 She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head
of John the Baptist," she answered.
25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you
to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his
dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.
27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head.
The man went, beheaded John in the prison,
28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl,
and she gave it to her mother.
29 On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it
in a tomb.
9:13 But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything
they wished, just as it is written about him."
11:32 But if we say, 'From men'...." (They feared the people, for everyone
held that John really was a prophet.)
LUK 1:11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right
side of the altar of incense.
12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer
has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to
give him the name John.
14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of
his birth,
15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine
or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even
from birth.
16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.
17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah,
to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to
the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
18 Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man
and my wife is well along in years."
19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and
I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this
happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at
their proper time."
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a
son.
58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great
mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were
going to name him after his father Zechariah,
60 but his mother spoke up and said, "No! He is to be called John."
61 They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who has that
name."
62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to
name the child.
63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote,
"His name is John."
64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he
began to speak, praising God.
65 The neighbors were all filled with awe, and throughout the hill country
of Judea people were talking about all these things.
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you
will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness
of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will
come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to
guide our feet into the path of peace."
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the
desert until he appeared publicly to Israel.
3:2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came
to John son of Zechariah in the desert.
3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
4 As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "A voice
of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight
paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The
crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth.
6 And all mankind will see God's salvation.'"
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of
vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their
hearts if John might possibly be the Christ.
16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more
powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to
untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to
gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with
unquenchable fire."
18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the
good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his
brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done,
20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.
21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as
he was praying, heaven was opened
22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a
voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well
pleased."
5:33 They said to him, "John's disciples often fast and pray, and so do
the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking."
7:18 John's disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of
them,
19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the one who was to come, or
should we expect someone else?"
20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you
to ask, 'Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone
else?'"
21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and
evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.
22 So he replied to the messengers, "Go back and report to John what you
have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have
leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is
preached to the poor.
23 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."
24 After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about
John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the
wind?
25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No,
those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.
26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more
than a prophet.
27 This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger
ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than
John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."
29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' words,
acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by
John.
30 But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God's purpose for
themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31 "To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are
they like?
32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to
each other: "'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a
dirge, and you did not cry.'
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and
you say, 'He has a demon.'
9:19 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and
still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life."
11:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one
of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught
his disciples."
20:6 But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, because they
are persuaded that John was a prophet."
JOH 1:6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through
him all men might believe.
8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of
whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before
me.'"
22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to
those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one
calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.'"
24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent
25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor
Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do
not know.
27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not
worthy to untie."
28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where
John was baptizing.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb
of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has
surpassed me because he was before me.'
31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water
was that he might be revealed to Israel."
32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven
as a dove and remain on him.
33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize
with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and
remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?"
They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he
was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John
had said and who had followed Jesus.
3:23 Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was
plenty of water, and people were constantly coming to be baptized.
24 (This was before John was put in prison.)
25 An argument developed between some of John's disciples and a certain
Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.
26 They came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, that man who was with you on
the other side of the Jordan--the one you testified about--well, he is
baptizing, and everyone is going to him."
27 To this John replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from
heaven.
28 You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am
sent ahead of him.'
29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the
bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the
bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
30 He must become greater; I must become less.
31 "The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the
earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who
comes from heaven is above all.
32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his
testimony.
33 The man who has accepted it has certified that God is truthful.
34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives
the Spirit without limit.
35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the
Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
5:32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his
testimony about me is valid.
33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.
34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be
saved.
35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to
enjoy his light.
10:41 and many people came to him. They said, "Though John never performed
a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true."
ACT 13:24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism
to all the people of Israel.
25 As John was completing his work, he said: 'Who do you think I am? I am
not that one. No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy
to untie.'
19:4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the
people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus."
