PETER

York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.
MAT 4:18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two
brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a
net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
8:14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law
lying in bed with a fever.
10:2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is
called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother
John;
14:28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the
water."
29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the
water and came toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried
out, "Lord, save me!"
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little
faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
15:15 Peter said, "Explain the parable to us."
16 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them.
16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God."
17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not
revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my
church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on
earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be
loosed in heaven."
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said.
"This shall never happen to you!"
23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a
stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the
things of men."
17:1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother
of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and
his clothes became as white as the light.
3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with
Jesus.
4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I
will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice
from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well
pleased. Listen to him!"
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground,
terrified.
7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."
8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't
tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from
the dead."
10 The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that
Elijah must come first?"
11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize
him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son
of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John
the Baptist.
18:21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I
forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?"
26:33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never
will."
34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the
rooster crows, you will disown me three times."
35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never
disown you." And all the other disciples said the same.
36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he
said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began
to be sorrowful and troubled.
38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point
of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed,
"My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I
will, but as you will."
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you
men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter.
41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit
is willing, but the body is weak."
42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not
possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be
done."
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes
were heavy.
44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time,
saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still
sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is
betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"
51 With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out
and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the
high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to
him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said.
70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking
about," he said.
71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to
the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!"
73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said,
"Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away."
74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I
don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed.
75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster
crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept
bitterly.
MAR 1:16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his
brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
18 At once they left their nets and followed him.
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to
the home of Simon and Andrew.
30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus
about her.
36 Simon and his companions went to look for him,
37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!"
3:16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name
Peter);
5:37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the
brother of James.
8:29 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter
answered, "You are the Christ."
32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to
rebuke him.
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter.
"Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of
God, but the things of men."
9:2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them
up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured
before them.
3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could
bleach them.
4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with
Jesus.
5 Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up
three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."
6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)
7 Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the
cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!"
8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them
except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to
tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the
dead.
10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what "rising from the
dead" meant.
11 And they asked him, "Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah
must come first?"
11:21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you
cursed has withered!"
13:3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple,
Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately,
4 "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that
they are all about to be fulfilled?"
14:29 Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not."
30 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today--yes, tonight--before
the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times."
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I
will never disown you." And all the others said the same.
33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply
distressed and troubled.
34 "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to
them. "Stay here and keep watch."
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if
possible the hour might pass from him.
36 "Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup
from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he
said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?
38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is
willing, but the body is weak."
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes
were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and
resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into
the hands of sinners.
42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"
47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant
of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high
priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the
high priest came by.
67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. "You
also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said.
68 But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking
about," he said, and went out into the entryway.
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing
around, "This fellow is one of them."
70 Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to
Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean."
71 He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, "I don't
know this man you're talking about."
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered
the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will
disown me three times." And he broke down and wept.
16:7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into
Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'"
LUK 4:38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now
Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus
to help her.
5:1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the
people crowding around him and listening to the word of God,
2 he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who
were washing their nets.
3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him
to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from
the boat.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep
water, and let down the nets for a catch."
5 Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught
anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that
their nets began to break.
7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them,
and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away
from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"
9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they
had taken,
10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then
Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men."
11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed
him.
6:14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip,
Bartholomew,
8:45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said,
"Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you."
51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in
with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother.
9:20 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter
answered, "The Christ of God."
28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James
with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.
29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes
became as bright as a flash of lightning.
30 Two men, Moses and Elijah,
31 appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his
departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.
32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully
awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good
for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses
and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.)
12:41 Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to
everyone?"
22:8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us
to eat the Passover."
31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.
32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And
when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to
death."
34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you
will deny three times that you know me."
40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall
into temptation."
41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will,
but yours be done."
43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like
drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them
asleep, exhausted from sorrow.
46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you
will not fall into temptation."
50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his
right ear.
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the
high priest. Peter followed at a distance.
55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had
sat down together, Peter sat down with them.
56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked
closely at him and said, "This man was with him."
57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of
them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with
him, for he is a Galilean."
60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as
he was speaking, the rooster crowed.
61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the
word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will
disown me three times."
62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
24:12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the
strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself
what had happened.
34 and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."
JOH 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You
are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated,
is Peter).
6:68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the
words of eternal life.
69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
13:6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash
my feet?"
7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you
will understand."
8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered,
"Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my
head as well!"
10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his
feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of
you."
11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not
every one was clean.
36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied,
"Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."
37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life
for you."
38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell
you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
18:10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high
priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was
Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup
the Father has given me?"
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this
disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high
priest's courtyard,
16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was
known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and
brought Peter in.
17 "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked
Peter. He replied, "I am not."
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they
had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
25 As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of
his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not."
26 One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear
Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive
grove?"
27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
20:2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one
Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we
don't know where they have put him!"
3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the
tomb first.
5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did
not go in.
6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He
saw the strips of linen lying there,
21:1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of
Tiberias. It happened this way:
2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee,
the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.
3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go
with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they
caught nothing.
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did
not realize that it was Jesus.
5 He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they
answered.
6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find
some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the
large number of fish.
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As
soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer
garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of
large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.
12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples
dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord.
13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with
the fish.
14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he
was raised from the dead.
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of
John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you
know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."
16 Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He
answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of
my sheep."
17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He
said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said,
"Feed my sheep.
18 I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and
went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your
hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want
to go."
19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would
glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!"
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following
them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and
had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?")
21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?"
22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is
that to you? You must follow me."
23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple
would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said,
"If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"
ACT 1:13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were
staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and
Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the
Zealot, and Judas son of James.
15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering
about a hundred and twenty)
2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed
the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me
explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to
Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name
of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--
for all whom the Lord our God will call."
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save
yourselves from this corrupt generation."
41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand
were added to their number that day.
3:1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of
prayer--at three in the afternoon.
2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate
called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into
the temple courts.
3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.
4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at
us!"
5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from
them.
6 Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give
you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."
7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's
feet and ankles became strong.
8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the
temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.
9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God,
10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the
temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and
amazement at what had happened to him.
11 While the beggar held on to Peter and John, all the people were
astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's
Colonnade.
12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Men of Israel, why does this
surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we
had made this man walk?
4:1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came
up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.
2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the
people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
3 They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in
jail until the next day.
4 But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to
about five thousand.
5 The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in
Jerusalem.
6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander
and the other men of the high priest's family.
7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them:
"By what power or what name did you do this?"
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and
elders of the people!
13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were
unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that
these men had been with Jesus.
14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there
with them, there was nothing they could say.
15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred
together.
16 "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living
in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot
deny it.
17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we
must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name."
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach
at all in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right
in God's sight to obey you rather than God.
20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."
21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to
punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had
happened.
22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and
reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
5:1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a
piece of property.
2 With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for
himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet.
3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart
that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of
the money you received for the land?
4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold,
wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a
thing? You have not lied to men but to God."
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized
all who heard what had happened.
6 Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him
out and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the
land?" "Yes," she said, "that is the price."
9 Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?
Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they
will carry you out also."
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men
came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her
husband.
11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these
events.
17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the
party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.
19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail
and brought them out.
20 "Go, stand in the temple courts," he said, "and tell the people the
full message of this new life."
21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and
began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived,
they called together the Sanhedrin--the full assembly of the elders of
Israel--and sent to the jail for the apostles.
22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So
they went back and reported,
23 "We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the
doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside."
24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief
priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this.
25 Then someone came and said, "Look! The men you put in jail are standing
in the temple courts teaching the people."
26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles.
They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone
them.
27 Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin
to be questioned by the high priest.
28 "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name," he said. "Yet
you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us
guilty of this man's blood."
29 Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than
men!
30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead--whom you had killed
by hanging him on a tree.
31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he
might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.
32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God
has given to those who obey him."
33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to
death.
34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by
all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put
outside for a little while.
35 Then he addressed them: "Men of Israel, consider carefully what you
intend to do to these men.
36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four
hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were
dispersed, and it all came to nothing.
37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and
led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers
were scattered.
38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let
them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.
39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will
only find yourselves fighting against God."
40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them
flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let
them go.
41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been
counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.
42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never
stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
8:14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the
word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.
15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the
Holy Spirit,
16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had
simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the
Holy Spirit.
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the
apostles' hands, he offered them money
19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my
hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought
you could buy the gift of God with money!
21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not
right before God.
22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive
you for having such a thought in your heart.
23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin."
24 Then Simon answered, "Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have
said may happen to me."
25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, Peter and
John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan
villages.
9:32 As Peter traveled about the country, he went to visit the saints in
Lydda.
33 There he found a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden
for eight years.
34 "Aeneas," Peter said to him, "Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take
care of your mat." Immediately Aeneas got up.
36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is
Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor.
37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and
placed in an upstairs room.
38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in
Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!"
39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the
room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and
other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
40 Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and
prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up." She
opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up.
41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the
believers and the widows and presented her to them alive.
42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.
43 Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.
10:1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was
known as the Italian Regiment.
2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to
those in need and prayed to God regularly.
3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly
saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!"
4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel
answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial
offering before God.
5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called
Peter.
6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea."
7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his
servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.
8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and
approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was
being prepared, he fell into a trance.
11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to
earth by its four corners.
12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of
the earth and birds of the air.
13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."
14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure
or unclean."
15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that
God has made clean."
16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to
heaven.
17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent
by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate.
18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying
there.
19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to
him, "Simon, three men are looking for you.
20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I
have sent them."
21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for.
Why have you come?"
22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a
righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A
holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear
what you have to say."
23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next
day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went
along.
24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them
and had called together his relatives and close friends.
25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in
reverence.
26 But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man
myself."
27 Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of
people.
28 He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a
Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I
should not call any man impure or unclean.
29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask
why you sent for me?"
30 Cornelius answered: "Four days ago I was in my house praying at this
hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood
before me
31 and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your
gifts to the poor.
32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home
of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.'
33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we
are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has
commanded you to tell us."
34 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does
not show favoritism
35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all
who heard the message.
45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that
the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter
said,
47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have
received the Holy Spirit just as we have."
48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then
they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
11:1 The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the
Gentiles also had received the word of God.
2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized
him
3 and said, "You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with
them."
4 Peter began and explained everything to them precisely as it had
happened:
12:3 When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter
also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be
guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him
out for public trial after the Passover.
5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God
for him.
6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping
between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at
the entrance.
7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He
struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the
chains fell off Peter's wrists.
8 Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter
did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him.
9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the
angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.
10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate
leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through
it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left
him.
11 Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that
the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from
everything the Jewish people were anticipating."
12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of
John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.
13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda
came to answer the door.
14 When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back
without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!"
15 "You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that
it was so, they said, "It must be his angel."
16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him,
they were astonished.
17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the
Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the brothers about
this," he said, and then he left for another place.
18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to
what had become of Peter.
19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he
cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod
went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there a while.
15:7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers,
you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles
might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.
8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the
Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.
9 He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts
by faith.
10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the
disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?
11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are
saved, just as they are."
GAL 1:18 Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted
with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days.
2:9 James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and
Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given
to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews.
1PE 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in
the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and
Bithynia,
2PE 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who
through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received
a faith as precious as ours:
16 We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the
power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his
majesty.
17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came
to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with
him I am well pleased."
18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with
him on the sacred mountain.
