BEREAVEMENT

York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

GEN 23:2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan,
and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.

37:34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his
son many days.

35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be
comforted. "No," he said, "in mourning will I go down to the grave to my
son." So his father wept for him.

50:1 Joseph threw himself upon his father and wept over him and kissed
him.

4 When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh's court,
"If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him,

EXO 12:29 At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in Egypt,
from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of
the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the
livestock as well.

30 Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the
night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house
without someone dead.

LEV 10:6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do
not let your hair become unkempt, and do not tear your clothes, or you will
die and the LORD will be angry with the whole community. But your
relatives, all the house of Israel, may mourn for those the LORD has
destroyed by fire.

RTH 1:3 Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her
two sons.

5 both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two
sons and her husband.

20 "Don't call me Naomi," she told them. "Call me Mara, because the
Almighty has made my life very bitter.

21 I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me
Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon
me."

2SA 12:15 After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that
Uriah's wife had borne to David, and he became ill.

16 David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and went into his house
and spent the nights lying on the ground.

17 The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the
ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them.

18 On the seventh day the child died. David's servants were afraid to tell
him that the child was dead, for they thought, "While the child was still
living, we spoke to David but he would not listen to us. How can we tell
him the child is dead? He may do something desperate."

19 David noticed that his servants were whispering among themselves and he
realized the child was dead. "Is the child dead?" he asked. "Yes," they
replied, "he is dead."

20 Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions
and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped.
Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and
he ate.

21 His servants asked him, "Why are you acting this way? While the child
was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up
and eat!"

22 He answered, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I
thought, 'Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child
live.'

23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again?
I will go to him, but he will not return to me."

18:33 The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and
wept. As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If
only I had died instead of you--O Absalom, my son, my son!"

19:4 The king covered his face and cried aloud, "O my son Absalom! O
Absalom, my son, my son!"

JOB 1:19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck
the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and
I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell
to the ground in worship

21 and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart.
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be
praised."

PRO 15:13 A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the
spirit.

ECC 7:2 It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of
feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take
this to heart.

3 Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the
heart.

4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of
fools is in the house of pleasure.

EZE 24:16 "Son of man, with one blow I am about to take away from you the
delight of your eyes. Yet do not lament or weep or shed any tears.

17 Groan quietly; do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban fastened and
your sandals on your feet; do not cover the lower part of your face or eat
the customary food of mourners."

18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife
died. The next morning I did as I had been commanded.

HOS 9:12 Even if they rear children, I will bereave them of every one. Woe
to them when I turn away from them!

2CO 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,

4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any
trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

1TH 4:13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall
asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.

14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God
will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still
alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede
those who have fallen asleep.

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command,
with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the
dead in Christ will rise first.

17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up
together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we
will be with the Lord forever.

18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
