BROTHERLY LOVE
Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New
York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.
LEV 19:18 "'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your
people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.
34 The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born.
Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.
DEU 10:19 And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves
were aliens in Egypt.
PSA 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in
unity!
PRO 10:12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.
15:17 Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf
with hatred.
17:9 He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the
matter separates close friends.
17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
24:17 Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let
your heart rejoice,
18 or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from him.
SON 8:6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for
love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns
like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.
7 Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were
to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.
MAT 5:41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who
wants to borrow from you.
10:41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a
prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a
righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward.
42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little
ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not
lose his reward."
19:19 honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as
yourself.'"
25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and
you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after
me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry
and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes
and clothe you?
39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
MAR 9:41 I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my
name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.
12:30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind and with all your strength.'
31 The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no
commandment greater than these."
33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with
all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important
than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
LUK 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even
'sinners' love those who love them.
33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to
you? Even 'sinners' do that.
34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is
that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in
full.
35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without
expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you
will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and
wicked.
10:27 He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with
all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and,
'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my
neighbor?"
30 In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,
when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes,
beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the
man, he passed by on the other side.
32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on
the other side.
33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he
saw him, he took pity on him.
34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then
he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.
35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the
innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse
you for any extra expense you may have.'
36 "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell
into the hands of robbers?"
37 The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus
told him, "Go and do likewise."
JOH 13:14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you
also should wash one another's feet.
15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so
you must love one another.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one
another."
15:12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his
friends.
ACT 20:26 Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the
blood of all men.
27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.
31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped
warning each of you night and day with tears.
26:29 Paul replied, "Short time or long--I pray God that not only you but
all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these
chains."
ROM 1:12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each
other's faith.
5:7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man
someone might possibly dare to die.
9:3 For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for
the sake of my brothers, those of my own race,
12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above
yourselves.
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to
associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
13:8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love
one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.
9 The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not
steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are
summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
10 Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of
the law.
14:19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to
mutual edification.
21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that
will cause your brother to fall.
15:1 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not
to please ourselves.
2 Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of
unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus,
7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring
praise to God.
14 I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of
goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another.
32 so that by God's will I may come to you with joy and together with you
be refreshed.
1CO 1:4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in
Christ Jesus.
8:13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will
never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.
10:24 Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.
13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I
am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all
knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not
love, I am nothing.
3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,
but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it
is not proud.
5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it
keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where
there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will
pass away.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of
these is love.
16:14 Do everything in love.
2CO 1:4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those
in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are
comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance
of the same sufferings we suffer.
14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully
that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the
Lord Jesus.
2:4 For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with
many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for
you.
3:2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read
by everybody.
4:5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and
ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
7:2 Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have
corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.
12 So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did
the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see
for yourselves how devoted to us you are.
12:15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend
myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?
19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves
to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God as those in Christ; and
everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening.
13:9 We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer
is for your perfection.
GAL 5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your
freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness,
26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should
restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.
2 Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of
Christ.
10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
EPH 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one
another in love.
32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as
in Christ God forgave you.
5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up
for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
PHI 1:3 I thank my God every time I remember you.
4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy
5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you
in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the
gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me.
8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ
Jesus.
9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in
knowledge and depth of insight,
23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which
is better by far;
24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with
all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will
overflow on account of me.
2:2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love,
being one in spirit and purpose.
COL 1:3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we
pray for you,
4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you
have for all the saints--
24 Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh
what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of
his body, which is the church.
28 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so
that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
2:2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love,
so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order
that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,
5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit
and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ
is.
3:12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have
against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together
in perfect unity.
1TH 2:7 but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little
children.
8 We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only
the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to
us.
11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his
own children,
3:10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and
supply what is lacking in your faith.
12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and
for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
4:9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you
yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on
faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in
fact you are doing.
2TH 1:4 Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance
and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.
1TI 1:5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart
and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
4:12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in
purity.
2TI 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear
conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.
4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with
joy.
2:10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they
too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
HEB 6:10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you
have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
10:24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and
good deeds.
13:1 Keep on loving each other as brothers.
2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have
entertained angels without knowing it.
3 Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and
those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
JAM 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is
this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep
oneself from being polluted by the world.
2:8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your
neighbor as yourself," you are doing right.
1PE 1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so
that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from
the heart.
2:17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers,
fear God, honor the king.
3:8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic,
love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a
multitude of sins.
2PE 1:7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness,
love.
1JO 2:10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is
nothing in him to make him stumble.
3:11 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one
another.
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our
brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for
us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has
no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?
18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions
and in truth.
23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus
Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
4:7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.
Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us
and his love is made complete in us.
20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For
anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God,
whom he has not seen.
21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his
brother.
5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and
everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and
carrying out his commands.
2JO 1:5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we
have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another.
