CONSOLATION

York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.
GEN 21:17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar
from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;
God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.
26:24 That night the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am the God of your
father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and
will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant
Abraham."
31:42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac,
had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But
God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he
rebuked you."
EXO 3:7 The LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in
Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I
am concerned about their suffering.
14:13 Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you
will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you
see today you will never see again.
DEU 33:27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the
everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, 'Destroy
him!'
2SA 22:28 You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring
them low.
JOB 5:6 For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble
sprout from the ground.
7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
8 "But if it were I, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before
him.
9 He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be
counted.
10 He bestows rain on the earth; he sends water upon the countryside.
11 The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no
success.
13 He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily
are swept away.
14 Darkness comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the
night.
15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from
the clutches of the powerful.
16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.
17 "Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline
of the Almighty.
18 For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also
heal.
19 From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will befall
you.
20 In famine he will ransom you from death, and in battle from the stroke
of the sword.
21 You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear
when destruction comes.
22 You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts
of the earth.
23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild
animals will be at peace with you.
24 You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your
property and find nothing missing.
25 You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants
like the grass of the earth.
26 You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in
season.
27 "We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to
yourself."
11:16 You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters
gone by.
17 Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like
morning.
18 You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and
take your rest in safety.
19 You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid, and many will court
your favor.
16:5 But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring
you relief.
29:25 I chose the way for them and sat as their chief; I dwelt as a king
among his troops; I was like one who comforts mourners.
PSA 9:9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of
trouble.
10 Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never
forsaken those who seek you.
23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort
me.
27:5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he
will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.
30:5 For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
31:17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I have cried out to you; but
let the wicked be put to shame and lie silent in the grave.
34:4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my
fears.
19 A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from
them all;
37:23 If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm;
24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his
hand.
41:3 The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed
of illness.
42:5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your
hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and
46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
50:15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you
will honor me."
55:22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never
let the righteous fall.
56:8 Record my lament; list my tears on your scroll--are they not in your
record?
62:1 My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be
shaken.
3 How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down--this
leaning wall, this tottering fence?
4 They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight
in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.
Selah
5 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.
6 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be
shaken.
7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my
refuge.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for
God is our refuge. Selah
68:6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with
singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
71:20 Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will
restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me
up.
73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
94:17 Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the
silence of death.
19 When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my
soul.
103:13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has
compassion on those who fear him;
112:4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and
compassionate and righteous man.
119:50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
92 If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my
affliction.
143 Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my
delight.
138:3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch
out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save
me.
8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures
forever--do not abandon the works of your hands.
140:12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the
cause of the needy.
145:14 The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed
down.
147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
PRO 12:13 An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man
escapes trouble.
ISA 4:6 It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a
refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.
25:4 You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in his
distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the
breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall
30:20 Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of
affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you
will see them.
40:1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your
God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my
righteous right hand.
17 "The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues
are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of
Israel, will not forsake them.
42:3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not
snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you
pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk
through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you
ablaze.
49:13 Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O
mountains! For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his
afflicted ones.
50:9 It is the Sovereign LORD who helps me. Who is he that will condemn
me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths will eat them up.
54:4 "Do not be afraid; you will not suffer shame. Do not fear disgrace;
you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and
remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.
58:10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the
needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your
night will become like the noonday.
61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has
anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the
brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from
darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD'S favor and the day of vengeance of our
God, to comfort all who mourn,
3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion--to bestow on them a crown of
beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a
garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks
of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.
66:5 Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at his word: "Your
brothers who hate you, and exclude you because of my name, have said, 'Let
the LORD be glorified, that we may see your joy!' Yet they will be put to
shame.
13 As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be
comforted over Jerusalem."
JER 31:13 Then maidens will dance and be glad, young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy
instead of sorrow.
25 I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint."
39:17 But I will rescue you on that day, declares the LORD; you will not
be handed over to those you fear.
18 I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with
your life, because you trust in me, declares the LORD.'"
HOS 6:1 "Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he
will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.
NAH 1:7 The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those
who trust in him,
MAT 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say
all kinds of evil against you because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the
same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall
to the ground apart from the will of your Father.
11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest.
25:34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are
blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you
since the creation of the world.
LUK 6:21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in
heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
7:13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't
cry."
JOH 14:1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in
me.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be
with you forever--
18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as
the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
16:20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world
rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and
you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In
this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the
world."
ROM 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those
who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or
hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
36 As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are
considered as sheep to be slaughtered."
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor
demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be
able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,
so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might
have hope.
2CO 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any
trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also
through Christ our comfort overflows.
4:8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not
in despair;
9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life
of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away,
yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal
glory that far outweighs them all.
12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is
made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about
my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
GAL 6:2 Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the
law of Christ.
2TH 1:7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This
will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire
with his powerful angels.
2:16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us
and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,
17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
2TI 2:12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he
will also disown us;
4:17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through
me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear
it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth.
HEB 2:18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to
help those who are being tempted.
4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we
are--yet was without sin.
16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we
may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of
witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so
easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for
us.
2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who
for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat
down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you
will not grow weary and lose heart.
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of
shedding your blood.
13:3 Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and
those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you
have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake
you."
6 So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?"
JAM 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he
has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised
to those who love him.
27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to
look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from
being polluted by the world.
5:8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.
1PE 2:23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when
he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who
judges justly.
4:13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that
you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
REV 2:10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the
devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer
persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I
will give you the crown of life.
3:10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep
you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to
test those who live on the earth.
7:17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he
will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every
tear from their eyes."
