HYPOCRISY

Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New
York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

JOB 8:13 Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope
of the godless.

14 What he trusts in is fragile; what he relies on is a spider's web.

15 He leans on his web, but it gives way; he clings to it, but it does not
hold.

13:16 Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance, for no godless man
would dare come before him!

15:22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword.

23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at
hand.

24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a
king poised to attack,

25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the
Almighty,

26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield.

27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh,

28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses
crumbling to rubble.

29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his
possessions spread over the land.

30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and
the breath of God's mouth will carry him away.

31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will
get nothing in return.

32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not
flourish.

33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive
tree shedding its blossoms.

34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume
the tents of those who love bribes.

17:8 Upright men are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against
the ungodly.

20:4 "Surely you know how it has been from of old, ever since man was
placed on the earth,

27:8 For what hope has the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away
his life?

9 Does God listen to his cry when distress comes upon him?

10 Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all
times?

31:33 if I have concealed my sin as men do, by hiding my guilt in my heart

34 because I so feared the crowd and so dreaded the contempt of the clans
that I kept silent and would not go outside

34:30 to keep a godless man from ruling, from laying snares for the
people.

36:13 "The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them,
they do not cry for help.

14 They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines.

PSA 5:9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled
with destruction. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they
speak deceit.

50:16 But to the wicked, God says: "What right have you to recite my laws
or take my covenant on your lips?

52:4 You love every harmful word, O you deceitful tongue!

55:12 If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were
raising himself against me, I could hide from him.

13 But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,

14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng
at the house of God.

20 My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.

21 His speech is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are
more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.

23  But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption;
bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as
for me, I trust in you.

78:34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to
him again.

35 They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their
Redeemer.

36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with
their tongues;

37 their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his
covenant.

101:7 No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who
speaks falsely will stand in my presence.

PRO 7:10 Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and
with crafty intent.

11  (She is loud and defiant, her feet never stay at home;

12 now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks.)

13 She took hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said:

14 "I have fellowship offerings at home; today I fulfilled my vows.

15 So I came out to meet you; I looked for you and have found you!

16 I have covered my bed with colored linens from Egypt.

17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.

18 Come, let's drink deep of love till morning; let's enjoy ourselves with
love!

19 My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey.

20 He took his purse filled with money and will not be home till full
moon."

21 With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her
smooth talk.

11:9 With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through
knowledge the righteous escape.

14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the
folly of fools is deception.

15:8 The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the
upright pleases him.

20:14 "It's no good, it's no good!" says the buyer; then off he goes and
boasts about his purchase.

21:27 The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable-- how much more so when
brought with evil intent!

23:6  Do not eat the food of a stingy man, do not crave his delicacies;

7 for he is the kind of man who is always thinking about the cost. "Eat
and drink," he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

25:19 Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in
times of trouble.

26:18 Like a madman shooting firebrands or deadly arrows

23 Like a coating of glaze over earthenware are fervent lips with an evil
heart.

24 A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but in his heart he
harbors deceit.

25 Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven
abominations fill his heart.

26 His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be
exposed in the assembly.

ISA 1:13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable
to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations--I cannot bear your evil
assemblies.

15  When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you;
even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of
blood;

9:17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men, nor will
he pity the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly and wicked,
every mouth speaks vileness. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned
away, his hand is still upraised.

10:6 I send him against a godless nation, I dispatch him against a people
who anger me, to seize loot and snatch plunder, and to trample them down
like mud in the streets.

29:13 The Lord says: "These people come near to me with their mouth and
honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship
of me is made up only of rules taught by men.

15 Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD,
who do their work in darkness and think, "Who sees us? Who will know?"

16 You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like
the clay! Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, "He did not make
me"? Can the pot say of the potter, "He knows nothing"?

32:5 No longer will the fool be called noble nor the scoundrel be highly
respected.

6 For the fool speaks folly, his mind is busy with evil: He practices
ungodliness and spreads error concerning the LORD; the hungry he leaves
empty and from the thirsty he withholds water.

33:14 The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: "Who
of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with
everlasting burning?"

48:1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of
Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of
the LORD and invoke the God of Israel--but not in truth or righteousness--

58:2 For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the
commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God
to come near them.

3 'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and you have not seen it? Why have we
humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' "Yet on the day of your
fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.

4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other
with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to
be heard on high.

5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble
himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on
sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the
LORD?

61:8 "For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and iniquity. In my
faithfulness I will reward them and make an everlasting covenant with them.

65:5 who say, 'Keep away; don't come near me, for I am too sacred for
you!' Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all
day.

JER 3:10 In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return
to me with all her heart, but only in pretense," declares the LORD.

5:2 Although they say, 'As surely as the LORD lives,' still they are
swearing falsely."

6:20 What do I care about incense from Sheba or sweet calamus from a
distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do
not please me."

7:4 Do not trust in deceptive words and say, "This is the temple of the
LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD!"

8 But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.

9 "'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense
to Baal and follow other gods you have not known,

10 and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name,
and say, "We are safe"--safe to do all these detestable things?

9:4 "Beware of your friends; do not trust your brothers. For every brother
is a deceiver, and every friend a slanderer.

8 Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks with deceit. With his mouth
each speaks cordially to his neighbor, but in his heart he sets a trap for
him.

12:2 You have planted them, and they have taken root; they grow and bear
fruit. You are always on their lips but far from their hearts.

17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can
understand it?

42:20 that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the LORD your God
and said, 'Pray to the LORD our God for us; tell us everything he says and
we will do it.'

LAM 1:2 Bitterly she weeps at night, tears are upon her cheeks. Among all
her lovers there is none to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her;
they have become her enemies.

EZE 14:7 "'When any Israelite or any alien living in Israel separates
himself from me and sets up idols in his heart and puts a wicked stumbling
block before his face and then goes to a prophet to inquire of me, I the
LORD will answer him myself.

8 I will set my face against that man and make him an example and a
byword. I will cut him off from my people. Then you will know that I am the
LORD.

20:39 "'As for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Sovereign LORD
says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you! But afterward you will
surely listen to me and no longer profane my holy name with your gifts and
idols.

33:30 "As for you, son of man, your countrymen are talking together about
you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other,
'Come and hear the message that has come from the LORD.'

31 My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen
to your words, but they do not put them into practice. With their mouths
they express devotion, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.

32 Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with
a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words
but do not put them into practice.

HOS 6:4 "What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.

7:14 They do not cry out to me from their hearts but wail upon their beds.
They gather together for grain and new wine but turn away from me.

8:2 Israel cries out to me, 'O our God, we acknowledge you!'

10:1 Israel was a spreading vine; he brought forth fruit for himself. As
his fruit increased, he built more altars; as his land prospered, he
adorned his sacred stones.

11:12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, the house of Israel with
deceit. And Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy
One.

AMO 5:21 "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your
assemblies.

23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of
your harps.

24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-
failing stream!

OBA 1:7 All your allies will force you to the border; your friends will
deceive and overpower you; those who eat your bread will set a trap for
you, but you will not detect it.

MIC 3:11 Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and
her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they lean upon the LORD and say,
"Is not the LORD among us? No disaster will come upon us."

7:5 Do not trust a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Even with her
who lies in your embrace be careful of your words.

ZEC 7:5 "Ask all the people of the land and the priests, 'When you fasted
and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was
it really for me that you fasted?

6 And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for
yourselves?

13:6 If someone asks him, 'What are these wounds on your body?' he will
answer, 'The wounds I was given at the house of my friends.'

MAL 1:6 "A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a
father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect
due me?" says the LORD Almighty. "It is you, O priests, who show contempt
for my name. "But you ask, 'How have we shown contempt for your name?'

7 "You place defiled food on my altar. "But you ask, 'How have we defiled
you?' "By saying that the LORD'S table is contemptible.

8 When you bring blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you
sacrifice crippled or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering
them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?"
says the LORD Almighty.

13 And you say, 'What a burden!' and you sniff at it contemptuously," says
the LORD Almighty. "When you bring injured, crippled or diseased animals
and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?" says
the LORD.

14 "Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows
to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the LORD. For I am a
great king," says the LORD Almighty, "and my name is to be feared among the
nations.

2:13 Another thing you do: You flood the LORD'S altar with tears. You weep
and wail because he no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts
them with pleasure from your hands.

3:14 "You have said, 'It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by
carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD
Almighty?

MAT 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to
where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned
you to flee from the coming wrath?

6:1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be
seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in
heaven.

2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the
hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I
tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray
standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I
tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they
disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth,
they have received their reward in full.

24 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the
other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot
serve both God and Money.

7:5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you
will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing,
but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of
heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in
your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'

23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you
evildoers!'

9:13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'
For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

15:7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

8 "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from
me.

9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'"

16:3 and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and
overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you
cannot interpret the signs of the times.

21:28 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the
first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.'

29 "'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He
answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go.

31 "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they
answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and
the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.

32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did
not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even
after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

22:12 'Friend,' he asked, 'how did you get in here without wedding
clothes?' The man was speechless.

13 "Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw
him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.'

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are
you trying to trap me?

23:2 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.

3 So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do
what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.

4 They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they
themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

5 "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries
wide and the tassels on their garments long;

6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in
the synagogues;

7 they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them
'Rabbi.'

8 "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and
you are all brothers.

9 And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and
he is in heaven.

10 Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the
Christ.

11 The greatest among you will be your servant.

12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself
will be exalted.

13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor
will you let those enter who are trying to.

14

15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one,
you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.

16 "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it
means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound
by his oath.'

17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes
the gold sacred?

18 You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if
anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.'

19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the
gift sacred?

20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on
it.

21 And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells
in it.

22 And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who
sits on it.

23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected
the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You
should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed
and self-indulgence.

26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then
the outside also will be clean.

27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are
like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the
inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.

28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but
on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

29 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.

30 And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would
not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'

31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those
who murdered the prophets.

32 Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers!

33 "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned
to hell?

24:50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not
expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.

51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites,
where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

25:3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.

41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are
cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you
gave me nothing to drink,

43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you
did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or
a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one
of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

MAR 7:6 He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you
hypocrites; as it is written: "'These people honor me with their lips, but
their hearts are far from me.

7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'

8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the
traditions of men."

9:50 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it
salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other."

12:38 As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law.
They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the
marketplaces,

39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of
honor at banquets.

40 They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such
men will be punished most severely."

LUK 6:46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

8:18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be
given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken
from him."

11:39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the
outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and
wickedness.

42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue
and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love
of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former
undone.

44 "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over
without knowing it."

52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to
knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who
were entering."

12:1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they
were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples,
saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is
hypocrisy.

2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that
will not be made known.

54 He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west,
immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does.

55 And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it
is.

56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and
the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?

13:13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up
and praised God.

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler
said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on
those days, not on the Sabbath."

15 The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the
Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it
water?

16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept
bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what
bound her?"

17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people
were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

26 "Then you will say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our
streets.'

27 "But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from. Away from
me, all you evildoers!'

14:34 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made
salty again?

16:13 "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and
love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You
cannot serve both God and Money."

15 He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes
of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is
detestable in God's sight.

18:11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you
that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like
this tax collector.

12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

20:46 "Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in
flowing robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and have the most
important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

47 They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such
men will be punished most severely."

21:16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and
friends, and they will put some of you to death.

JOH 6:26 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me,
not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had
your fill.

70 Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you
is a devil!"

7:19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law.
Why are you trying to kill me?"

15:2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every
branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more
fruitful.

6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away
and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

ROM 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the
godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their
wickedness,

2:1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else,
for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself,
because you who pass judgment do the same things.

3 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same
things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?

17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag
about your relationship to God;

18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are
instructed by the law;

19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for
those who are in the dark,

20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in
the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth--

21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach
against stealing, do you steal?

22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit
adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

23 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

24 As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because
of you."

25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the
law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.

26 If those who are not circumcised keep the law's requirements, will they
not be regarded as though they were circumcised?

27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will
condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision,
are a lawbreaker.

28 A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision
merely outward and physical.

29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is
circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a
man's praise is not from men, but from God.

9:6 It is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are
descended from Israel are Israel.

16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own
appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive
people.

1CO 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not
love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

2CO 4:2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use
deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting
forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in
the sight of God.

5:12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving
you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who
take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart.

GAL 6:3 If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives
himself.

PHI 3:2 Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those mutilators
of the flesh.

1TI 4:2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences
have been seared as with a hot iron.

2TI 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to
do with them.

TIT 1:16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They
are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

JAM 1:8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it
says.

23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a
man who looks at his face in a mirror

24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what
he looks like.

26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight
rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has
no deeds? Can such faith save him?

15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.

16 If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well
fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?

17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action,
is dead.

18 But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your
faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--
and shudder.

20 You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is
useless?

21 Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when
he offered his son Isaac on the altar?

22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his
faith was made complete by what he did.

23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and
it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.

24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith
alone.

25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous
for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a
different direction?

26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

3:17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then
peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit,
impartial and sincere.

1PE 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy,
envy, and slander of every kind.

16  Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil;
live as servants of God.

2PE 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there
will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive
heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift
destruction on themselves.

2 Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth
into disrepute.

3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have
made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their
destruction has not been sleeping.

17 These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm.
Blackest darkness is reserved for them.

19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of
depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.

1JO 1:6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not live by the truth.

2:4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a
liar, and the truth is not in him.

9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in
the darkness.

19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if
they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going
showed that none of them belonged to us.

4:20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar.
For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love
God, whom he has not seen.

JUD 1:12 These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you
without the slightest qualm--shepherds who feed only themselves. They are
clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit
and uprooted--twice dead.

REV 2:9 I know your afflictions and your poverty--yet you are rich! I know
the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue
of Satan.

3:1 "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of
him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your
deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be
Jews though they are not, but are liars--I will make them come and fall
down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.
