OATH

Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New
York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

GEN 14:22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to
the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, and have taken an
oath

23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the
thong of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, 'I made Abram
rich.'

21:22 At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his forces said
to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.

23 Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me
or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you are
living as an alien the same kindness I have shown to you."

22:16 and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you
have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

24:2 He said to the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of
all that he had, "Put your hand under my thigh.

3 I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth,
that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I am living,

9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and
swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

25:33 But Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore an oath to him,
selling his birthright to Jacob.

26:26 Meanwhile, Abimelech had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his
personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.

27 Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to
me and sent me away?"

28 They answered, "We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we said,
'There ought to be a sworn agreement between us'--between us and you. Let
us make a treaty with you

29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not molest you but always
treated you well and sent you away in peace. And now you are blessed by the
LORD."

31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac
sent them on their way, and they left him in peace.

31:53 May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their
father, judge between us." So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of
his father Isaac.

47:28 Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were
a hundred and forty-seven.

29 When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph
and said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under
my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do
not bury me in Egypt,

30 but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me
where they are buried." "I will do as you say," he said.

31 "Swear to me," he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped
as he leaned on the top of his staff.

50:25 And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath and said, "God will
surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this
place."

EXO 20:7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD
will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

22:10 "If a man gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to his
neighbor for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away while
no one is looking,

11 the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath before
the LORD that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other person's
property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required.

23:1 "Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a
malicious witness.

LEV 6:2 "If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the LORD by deceiving his
neighbor about something entrusted to him or left in his care or stolen, or
if he cheats him,

3 or if he finds lost property and lies about it, or if he swears falsely,
or if he commits any such sin that people may do--

4 when he thus sins and becomes guilty, he must return what he has stolen
or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to him, or the lost property
he found,

5 or whatever it was he swore falsely about. He must make restitution in
full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the
day he presents his guilt offering.

19:12 "'Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your
God. I am the LORD.

NUM 5:19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her,
"If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become
impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a
curse not harm you.

20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have
defiled yourself by sleeping with a man other than your husband"--

21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse of the oath--"may
the LORD cause your people to curse and denounce you when he causes your
thigh to waste away and your abdomen to swell.

22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen
swells and your thigh wastes away." "'Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So
be it."

23 "'The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them
off into the bitter water.

24 He shall have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and
this water will enter her and cause bitter suffering.

DEU 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his
name.

JOS 2:12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show
kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure
sign

13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and
sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death."

14 "Our lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don't tell
what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD
gives us the land."

6:22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the
prostitute's house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in
accordance with your oath to her."

9:3 However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to
Jericho and Ai,

4 they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were
loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.

5 The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes.
All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.

6 Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the
men of Israel, "We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with
us."

7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "But perhaps you live near us.
How then can we make a treaty with you?"

8 "We are your servants," they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, "Who are
you and where do you come from?"

9 They answered: "Your servants have come from a very distant country
because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him:
all that he did in Egypt,

10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the
Jordan--Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in
Ashtaroth.

11 And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, 'Take
provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We are your
servants; make a treaty with us."'

12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we
left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is.

13 And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they
are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey."

14 The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the
LORD.

15 Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the
leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.

16 Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the
Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them.

17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities:
Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.

18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the
assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The
whole assembly grumbled against the leaders,

19 but all the leaders answered, "We have given them our oath by the LORD,
the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now.

20 This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that wrath
will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them."

14:9 So on that day Moses swore to me, 'The land on which your feet have
walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because
you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.'

JDG 11:10 The elders of Gilead replied, "The LORD is our witness; we will
certainly do as you say."

21:5 Then the Israelites asked, "Who from all the tribes of Israel has
failed to assemble before the LORD?" For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah should certainly be
put to death.

RTH 1:17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the
LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates
you and me."

3:13 Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to redeem,
good; let him redeem. But if he is not willing, as surely as the LORD lives
I will do it. Lie here until morning."

1SA 19:6 Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: "As surely as the
LORD lives, David will not be put to death."

20:3 But David took an oath and said, "Your father knows very well that I
have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, 'Jonathan must
not know this or he will be grieved.' Yet as surely as the LORD lives and
as you live, there is only a step between me and death."

13 But if my father is inclined to harm you, may the LORD deal with me, be
it ever so severely, if I do not let you know and send you away safely. May
the LORD be with you as he has been with my father.

14 But show me unfailing kindness like that of the LORD as long as I live,
so that I may not be killed,

15 and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family--not even when the
LORD has cut off every one of David's enemies from the face of the earth."

16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May the
LORD call David's enemies to account."

17 And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because
he loved him as he loved himself.

24:21 Now swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants
or wipe out my name from my father's family."

22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and
his men went up to the stronghold.

28:10 Saul swore to her by the LORD, "As surely as the LORD lives, you
will not be punished for this."

2SA 3:35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was
still day; but David took an oath, saying, "May God deal with me, be it
ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!"

19:7 Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the LORD that if you
don't go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be
worse for you than all the calamities that have come upon you from your
youth till now."

21:7 The king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul,
because of the oath before the LORD between David and Jonathan son of Saul.

1KI 1:28 Then King David said, "Call in Bathsheba." So she came into the
king's presence and stood before him.

29 The king then took an oath: "As surely as the LORD lives, who has
delivered me out of every trouble,

2:23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD: "May God deal with me, be it
ever so severely, if Adonijah does not pay with his life for this request!

42 the king summoned Shimei and said to him, "Did I not make you swear by
the LORD and warn you, 'On the day you leave to go anywhere else, you can
be sure you will die'? At that time you said to me, 'What you say is good.
I will obey.'

8:31 "When a man wrongs his neighbor and is required to take an oath and
he comes and swears the oath before your altar in this temple,

32 then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants, condemning
the guilty and bringing down on his own head what he has done. Declare the
innocent not guilty, and so establish his innocence.

2KI 2:2 Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; the LORD has sent me to
Bethel." But Elisha said, "As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I
will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel.

5:20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, "My
master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what
he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get
something from him."

6:31 He said, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if the head
of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today!"

11:4 In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a
hundred, the Carites and the guards and had them brought to him at the
temple of the LORD. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at
the temple of the LORD. Then he showed them the king's son.

2CH 36:13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him
take an oath in God's name. He became stiff-necked and hardened his heart
and would not turn to the LORD, the God of Israel.

EZR 10:5 So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all
Israel under oath to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath.

19 (They all gave their hands in pledge to put away their wives, and for
their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.)

NEH 5:12 "We will give it back," they said. "And we will not demand
anything more from them. We will do as you say." Then I summoned the
priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath to do what they had
promised.

13 I also shook out the folds of my robe and said, "In this way may God
shake out of his house and possessions every man who does not keep this
promise. So may such a man be shaken out and emptied!" At this the whole
assembly said, "Amen," and praised the LORD. And the people did as they had
promised.

PSA 15:1 LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy
hill?

2 He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks
the truth from his heart

4 who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps
his oath even when it hurts,

89:35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness--and I will not lie to
David--

95:11 So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."

105:9 the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac.

132:11 The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath that he will not
revoke: "One of your own descendants I will place on your throne--

ECC 8:2 Obey the king's command, I say, because you took an oath before
God.

ISA 14:24 The LORD Almighty has sworn, "Surely, as I have planned, so it
will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand.

45:23 By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word
that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue
will swear.

48:1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of
Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of
the LORD and invoke the God of Israel--but not in truth or righteousness--

JER 4:2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way you swear, 'As surely
as the LORD lives,' then the nations will be blessed by him and in him they
will glory."

5:2 Although they say, 'As surely as the LORD lives,' still they are
swearing falsely."

7 "Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by
gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed
adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.

7:8 But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.

9 "'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense
to Baal and follow other gods you have not known,

11:5 Then I will fulfill the oath I swore to your forefathers, to give
them a land flowing with milk and honey'--the land you possess today." I
answered, "Amen, LORD."

12:16 And if they learn well the ways of my people and swear by my name,
saying, 'As surely as the LORD lives'--even as they once taught my people
to swear by Baal--then they will be established among my people.

22:5 But if you do not obey these commands, declares the LORD, I swear by
myself that this palace will become a ruin.'"

38:16 But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: "As surely
as the LORD lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor
hand you over to those who are seeking your life."

40:9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure
them and their men. "Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians," he said.
"Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well
with you.

49:13 I swear by myself," declares the LORD, "that Bozrah will become a
ruin and an object of horror, of reproach and of cursing; and all its towns
will be in ruins forever."

51:14 The LORD Almighty has sworn by himself: I will surely fill you with
men, as with a swarm of locusts, and they will shout in triumph over you.

DAN 9:11 All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to
obey you. "Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of
Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have
sinned against you.

12:7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river,
lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him
swear by him who lives forever, saying, "It will be for a time, times and
half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all
these things will be completed."

HOS 4:15 "Though you commit adultery, O Israel, let not Judah become
guilty. "Do not go to Gilgal; do not go up to Beth Aven. And do not swear,
'As surely as the LORD lives!'

MAT 5:33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago,
'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.'

34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's
throne;

35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is
the city of the Great King.

36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white
or black.

37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond
this comes from the evil one.

14:7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests,
he ordered that her request be granted

23:18 You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but
if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.'

19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the
gift sacred?

20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on
it.

21 And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells
in it.

22 And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who
sits on it.

26:63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge
you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of
God."

MAR 14:71 He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them,
"I don't know this man you're talking about."

LUK 1:73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

ACT 23:12 The next morning the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound
themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.

13 More than forty men were involved in this plot.

14 They went to the chief priests and elders and said, "We have taken a
solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.

2CO 1:23 I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I
did not return to Corinth.

GAL 1:20 I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie.

HEB 3:11 So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my
rest.'"

18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not
to those who disobeyed?

4:3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I
declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" And yet
his work has been finished since the creation of the world.

6:13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater
for him to swear by, he swore by himself,

14 saying, "I will surely bless you and give you many descendants."

16 Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms
what is said and puts an end to all argument.

17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very
clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.

7:21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: "The Lord
has sworn and will not change his mind: 'You are a priest forever.'"

28 For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath,
which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect
forever.

JAM 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth
or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will
be condemned.

REV 10:5 Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land
raised his right hand to heaven.

6 And he swore by him who lives for ever and ever, who created the heavens
and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and
all that is in it, and said, "There will be no more delay!
