ORPHAN

York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

GEN 11:27 This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram,
Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.

28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the
Chaldeans, in the land of his birth.

EXO 22:22 "Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your
wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

NUM 27:1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the
son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of
Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and
Tirzah. They approached

2 the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and stood before Moses, Eleazar the
priest, the leaders and the whole assembly, and said,

3 "Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah's followers, who
banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no
sons.

4 Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no
son? Give us property among our father's relatives."

5 So Moses brought their case before the LORD

DEU 10:18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves
the alien, giving him food and clothing.

14:28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's
produce and store it in your towns,

29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own)
and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may
come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you
in all the work of your hands.

16:11 And rejoice before the LORD your God at the place he will choose as
a dwelling for his Name--you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and
maidservants, the Levites in your towns, and the aliens, the fatherless and
the widows living among you.

14 Be joyful at your Feast--you, your sons and daughters, your menservants
and maidservants, and the Levites, the aliens, the fatherless and the
widows who live in your towns.

24:17 Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the
cloak of the widow as a pledge.

18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed
you from there. That is why I command you to do this.

19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not
go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so
that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a
second time. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the
widow.

21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines
again. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow.

22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do
this.

26:12 When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in
the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the
alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and
be satisfied.

13 Then say to the LORD your God: "I have removed from my house the sacred
portion and have given it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the
widow, according to all you commanded. I have not turned aside from your
commands nor have I forgotten any of them.

27:19 "Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the
fatherless or the widow." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

JDG 9:16 "Now if you have acted honorably and in good faith when you made
Abimelech king, and if you have been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family, and
if you have treated him as he deserves--

17 and to think that my father fought for you, risked his life to rescue
you from the hand of Midian

18 (but today you have revolted against my father's family, murdered his
seventy sons on a single stone, and made Abimelech, the son of his slave
girl, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is your brother)--

19 if then you have acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal
and his family today, may Abimelech be your joy, and may you be his, too!

20 But if you have not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume you,
citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and let fire come out from you,
citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelech!"

21 Then Jotham fled, escaping to Beer, and he lived there because he was
afraid of his brother Abimelech.

2SA 9:3 The king asked, "Is there no one still left of the house of Saul
to whom I can show God's kindness?" Ziba answered the king, "There is still
a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet."

2KI 11:1 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead,
she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family.

2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took
Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who
were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide
him from Athaliah; so he was not killed.

3 He remained hidden with his nurse at the temple of the LORD for six
years while Athaliah ruled the land.

4 In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a
hundred, the Carites and the guards and had them brought to him at the
temple of the LORD. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at
the temple of the LORD. Then he showed them the king's son.

5 He commanded them, saying, "This is what you are to do: You who are in
the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath--a third of you
guarding the royal palace,

6 a third at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guard, who
take turns guarding the temple--

7 and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath
duty are all to guard the temple for the king.

8 Station yourselves around the king, each man with his weapon in his
hand. Anyone who approaches your ranks must be put to death. Stay close to
the king wherever he goes."

9 The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest
ordered. Each one took his men--those who were going on duty on the Sabbath
and those who were going off duty--and came to Jehoiada the priest.

10 Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields that had belonged to
King David and that were in the temple of the LORD.

11 The guards, each with his weapon in his hand, stationed themselves
around the king--near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the
north side of the temple.

12 Jehoiada brought out the king's son and put the crown on him; he
presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They
anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and shouted, "Long live
the king!"

EST 2:7 Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up
because she had neither father nor mother. This girl, who was also known as
Esther, was lovely in form and features, and Mordecai had taken her as his
own daughter when her father and mother died.

JOB 6:27 You would even cast lots for the fatherless and barter away your
friend.

22:9 And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the
fatherless.

24:3 They drive away the orphan's donkey and take the widow's ox in
pledge.

9 The fatherless child is snatched from the breast; the infant of the poor
is seized for a debt.

29:12 because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless
who had none to assist him.

13 The man who was dying blessed me; I made the widow's heart sing.

31:16 "If I have denied the desires of the poor or let the eyes of the
widow grow weary,

17 if I have kept my bread to myself, not sharing it with the fatherless--

18 but from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my birth I
guided the widow--

21 if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had
influence in court,

PSA 10:14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to
take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of
the fatherless.

17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and
you listen to their cry,

18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is
of the earth, may terrify no more.

27:10 Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.

68:5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy
dwelling.

82:3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of
the poor and oppressed.

94:6 They slay the widow and the alien; they murder the fatherless.

146:9 The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the
widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

PRO 23:10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields
of the fatherless,

ISA 1:17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend
the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.

23 Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and
chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the
widow's case does not come before them.

10:1 Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive
decrees,

2 to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the
oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the
fatherless.

JER 5:28  and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit;
they do not plead the case of the fatherless to win it, they do not defend
the rights of the poor.

7:6 if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do
not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods
to your own harm,

7 then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your
forefathers for ever and ever.

22:3 This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from
the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or
violence to the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed
innocent blood in this place.

49:11 Leave your orphans; I will protect their lives. Your widows too can
trust in me."

LAM 5:3 We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows.

HOS 14:3 Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount war-horses. We will
never again say 'Our gods' to what our own hands have made, for in you the
fatherless find compassion."

MAL 3:5 "So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to
testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who
defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless,
and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty.

JAM 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is
this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep
oneself from being polluted by the world.
