PARABLES

Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New
York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

MAT 7:24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them
into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat
against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on
the rock.

26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into
practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat
against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

13:3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out
to sow his seed.

4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds
came and ate it up.

5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up
quickly, because the soil was shallow.

6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered
because they had no root.

7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop--a hundred,
sixty or thirty times what was sown.

9 He who has ears, let him hear."

18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:

19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand
it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This
is the seed sown along the path.

20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who
hears the word and at once receives it with joy.

21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or
persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who
hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of
wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

23 But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who
hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred,
sixty or thirty times what was sown."

24 Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man
who sowed good seed in his field.

25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among
the wheat, and went away.

26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 "The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow good
seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'

28 "'An enemy did this,' he replied. "The servants asked him, 'Do you want
us to go and pull them up?'

29 "'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may
root up the wheat with them.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the
harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned;
then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'"

31 He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard
seed, which a man took and planted in his field.

32 Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is
the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the
air come and perch in its branches."

33 He told them still another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like
yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it
worked all through the dough."

36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to
him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field."

37 He answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.

38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the
kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,

39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the
age, and the harvesters are angels.

40 "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at
the end of the age.

41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his
kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.

42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.

43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their
Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man
found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and
bought that field.

45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine
pearls.

46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he
had and bought it.

47 "Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into
the lake and caught all kinds of fish.

48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they
sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.

49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and
separate the wicked from the righteous

50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.

18:12 "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them
wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look
for the one that wandered off?

13 And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one
sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off.

14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these
little ones should be lost.

23 "Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle
accounts with his servants.

24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was
brought to him.

25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife
and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26 "The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he
begged, 'and I will pay back everything.'

27 The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him
go.

28 "But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay
back what you owe me!' he demanded.

29 "His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with
me, and I will pay you back.'

30 "But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into
prison until he could pay the debt.

31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly
distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32 "Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said,
'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.

33 Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on
you?'

34 In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured,
until he should pay back all he owed.

35 "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you
forgive your brother from your heart."

20:1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in
the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard.

2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his
vineyard.

3 "About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the
marketplace doing nothing.

4 He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you
whatever is right.'

5 So they went. "He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour
and did the same thing.

6 About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing
around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing
nothing?'

7 "'Because no one has hired us,' they answered. "He said to them, 'You
also go and work in my vineyard.'

8 "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call
the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired
and going on to the first.'

9 "The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each
received a denarius.

10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more.
But each one of them also received a denarius.

11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.

12 'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and
you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and
the heat of the day.'

13 "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you.
Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?

14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the
same as I gave you.

15 Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you
envious because I am generous?'

16 "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

21:28 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the
first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.'

29 "'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He
answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go.

31 "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they
answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and
the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.

32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did
not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even
after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

33 "Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a
vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a
watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a
journey.

34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants
to collect his fruit.

35 "The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and
stoned a third.

36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the
tenants treated them the same way.

37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. 'They will respect my son,' he
said.

38 "But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, 'This is
the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.'

39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40 "Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to
those tenants?"

41 "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end," they replied, "and he
will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the
crop at harvest time."

42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "'The stone
the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and
it is marvelous in our eyes'?

43 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from
you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

44 He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it
falls will be crushed."

22:1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying:

2 "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for
his son.

3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to
tell them to come, but they refused to come.

4 "Then he sent some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have been
invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have
been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.'

5 "But they paid no attention and went off--one to his field, another to
his business.

6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them.

7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and
burned their city.

8 "Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but those
I invited did not deserve to come.

9 Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.'

10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people
they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with
guests.

11 "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there
who was not wearing wedding clothes.

12 'Friend,' he asked, 'how did you get in here without wedding clothes?'
The man was speechless.

13 "Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw
him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.'

14 "For many are invited, but few are chosen."

24:32 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get
tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

25:1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took
their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.

3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.

4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.

5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and
fell asleep.

6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet
him!'

7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.

8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps
are going out.'

9 "'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you.
Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'

10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom
arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding
banquet. And the door was shut.

11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for
us!'

12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'

13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his
servants and entrusted his property to them.

15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to
another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his
journey.

16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his
money to work and gained five more.

17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more.

18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the
ground and hid his master's money.

19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled
accounts with them.

20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five.
'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained
five more.'

21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have
been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.
Come and share your master's happiness!'

22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you
entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'

23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have
been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.
Come and share your master's happiness!'

24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said,
'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and
gathering where you have not scattered seed.

25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See,
here is what belongs to you.'

26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I
harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?

27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so
that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 "'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten
talents.

29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance.
Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

MAR 4:1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered
around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the
lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water's edge.

2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said:

3 "Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.

7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so
that they did not bear grain.

8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a
crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times."

9 Then Jesus said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

14 The farmer sows the word.

15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As
soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in
them.

16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once
receive it with joy.

17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble
or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

18  Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word;

19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the
desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.

20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and
produce a crop--thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown."

26 He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters
seed on the ground.

27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and
grows, though he does not know how.

28 All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head,
then the full kernel in the head.

29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the
harvest has come."

30 Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what
parable shall we use to describe it?

31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the
ground.

32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden
plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its
shade."

12:1 He then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a
vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a
watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a
journey.

2 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them
some of the fruit of the vineyard.

3 But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

4 Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head
and treated him shamefully.

5  He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others;
some of them they beat, others they killed.

6 "He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all,
saying, 'They will respect my son.'

7 "But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's
kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9 "What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill
those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

10 Haven't you read this scripture: "'The stone the builders rejected has
become the capstone;

11 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

12 Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had
spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they
left him and went away.

13:28 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get
tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near,
right at the door.

34 It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants
in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to
keep watch.

35 "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the
house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the
rooster crows, or at dawn.

36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.

37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'"

LUK 6:47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my
words and puts them into practice.

49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is
like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment
the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was
complete."

7:41 "Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five
hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts
of both. Now which of them will love him more?"

43 Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled."
"You have judged correctly," Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this
woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,
but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered,
has not stopped kissing my feet.

46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.

47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved
much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

8:5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed,
some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate
it up.

6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they
had no moisture.

7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the
plants.

8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a
hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He
who has ears to hear, let him hear."

11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes
and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and
be saved.

13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they
hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time
of testing they fall away.

14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they
go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures,
and they do not mature.

15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart,
who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

10:30 In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to
Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his
clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.

31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the
man, he passed by on the other side.

32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on
the other side.

33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he
saw him, he took pity on him.

34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then
he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.

35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the
innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse
you for any extra expense you may have.'

36 "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell
into the hands of robbers?"

37 The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus
told him, "Go and do likewise."

11:5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes
to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing
to set before him.'

7 "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already
locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you
anything.'

8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he
is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give
him as much as he needs.

12:16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man
produced a good crop.

17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my
crops.'

18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and
build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for
many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."'

20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be
demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'

21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself
but is not rich toward God."

35 "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,

36 like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so
that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.

37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching
when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will
have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.

38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even
if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.

39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour
the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour
when you do not expect him."

13:6 Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree, planted in his
vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.

7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years
now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found
any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?'

8 "'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig
around it and fertilize it.

9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"

18 Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I
compare it to?

19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden.
It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its
branches."

20 Again he asked, "What shall I compare the kingdom of God to?

21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of
flour until it worked all through the dough."

14:15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to
Jesus, "Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of
God."

16 Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited
many guests.

17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had
been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.'

18 "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just
bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'

19 "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way
to try them out. Please excuse me.'

20 "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.'

21 "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner
of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the
streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the
blind and the lame.'

22 "'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is
still room.'

23 "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country
lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.

24 I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of
my banquet.'"

15:3 Then Jesus told them this parable:

4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he
not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep
until he finds it?

5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders

6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and
says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.'

7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven
over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do
not need to repent.

8 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not
light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and
says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.'

10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the
angels of God over one sinner who repents."

11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons.

12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the
estate.' So he divided his property between them.

13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off
for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.

14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole
country, and he began to be in need.

15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent
him to his fields to feed pigs.

16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating,
but no one gave him anything.

17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired
men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!

18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you.

19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your
hired men.'

20 So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way
off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to
his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against
you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and
put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.

24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is
found.' So they began to celebrate.

25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the
house, he heard music and dancing.

26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on.

27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the
fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'

28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father
went out and pleaded with him.

29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving
for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young
goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with
prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'

31 "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I
have is yours.

32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was
dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'"

16:1 Jesus told his disciples: "There was a rich man whose manager was
accused of wasting his possessions.

2 So he called him in and asked him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give
an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.'

3 "The manager said to himself, 'What shall I do now? My master is taking
away my job. I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg--

4 I know what I'll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will
welcome me into their houses.'

5 "So he called in each one of his master's debtors. He asked the first,
'How much do you owe my master?'

6 "'Eight hundred gallons of olive oil,' he replied. "The manager told
him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred.'

7 "Then he asked the second, 'And how much do you owe?' "'A thousand
bushels of wheat,' he replied. "He told him, 'Take your bill and make it
eight hundred.'

8 "The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted
shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with
their own kind than are the people of the light.

9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that
when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and
lived in luxury every day.

20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores

21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs
came and licked his sores.

22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to
Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.

23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far
away, with Lazarus by his side.

24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus
to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in
agony in this fire.'

25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received
your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is
comforted here and you are in agony.

26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed,
so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross
over from there to us.'

27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's
house,

28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also
come to this place of torment.'

29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to
them.'

30 "'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to
them, they will repent.'

31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they
will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"

18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should
always pray and not give up.

2 He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor
cared about men.

3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea,
'Grant me justice against my adversary.'

4 "For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though
I don't fear God or care about men,

5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets
justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!'"

6 And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says.

7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to
him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However,
when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on
everybody else, Jesus told this parable:

10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a
tax collector.

11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that
I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this
tax collector.

12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up
to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

14 "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified
before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who
humbles himself will be exalted."

19:11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a
parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the
kingdom of God was going to appear at once.

12 He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have
himself appointed king and then to return.

13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this
money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.'

14 "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We
don't want this man to be our king.'

15 "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the
servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had
gained with it.

16 "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.'

17 "'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have
been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.'

18 "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.'

19 "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.'

20 "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have
kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.

21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you
did not put in and reap what you did not sow.'

22 "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked
servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not
put in, and reaping what I did not sow?

23 Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back,
I could have collected it with interest?'

24 "Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and
give it to the one who has ten minas.'

25 "'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!'

26 "He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given,
but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.

27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--
bring them here and kill them in front of me.'"

20:9 He went on to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a
vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.

10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him
some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him
away empty-handed.

11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated
shamefully and sent away empty-handed.

12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

13 "Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my
son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.'

14 "But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. 'This is
the heir,' they said. 'Let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. "What then will
the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16 He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others."
When the people heard this, they said, "May this never be!"

17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what is the meaning of
that which is written: "'The stone the builders rejected has become the
capstone'?

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on
whom it falls will be crushed."

JOH 10:1 "I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen
by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.

2 The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep.

3 The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.
He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his
sheep follow him because they know his voice.

5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from
him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice."

6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he
was telling them.

7 Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the
sheep.

8 All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did
not listen to them.

9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in
and go out, and find pasture.

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that
they may have life, and have it to the full.

11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the
sheep.

12 The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees
the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks
the flock and scatters it.

13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the
sheep.

14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me--

15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father--and I lay down my
life for the sheep.

16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them
also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and
one shepherd.

15:1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch
that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by
itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you
remain in me.

5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in
him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
